Trapezius & Shoulder Tension
What is trapezius and shoulder tension?
The trapezius is a large muscle extending from the neck across the shoulders and upper back. It plays an important role in posture, movement and supporting the head and neck.
For some people, the muscle becomes chronically overactive or enlarged, contributing to neck discomfort, tension headaches, restricted movement or a broader shoulder appearance.
Why does it happen?
Trapezius tension may be influenced by:
- Stress
- Poor posture
- Repetitive movement
- Muscle overactivity
- Exercise and strength training
- Bruxism (teeth grinding and clenching)
- Lifestyle and occupational factors
Why treating the cause matters
Shoulder tension isn’t always caused by an overactive trapezius muscle.
Poor posture, stress, repetitive strain or other musculoskeletal factors may all contribute to ongoing discomfort or changes in shoulder contour.
Understanding what is driving the concern allows us to recommend the most appropriate treatment while ensuring it forms part of a broader strategy for long-term improvement.
How do we assess it?
Every consultation begins with understanding.
Your assessment may include:
- Medical consultation
- Assessment of muscle activity
- Postural assessment
- Review of symptoms and medical history
- Evaluation of previous treatments
- Lifestyle and occupational assessment
Our approach
Our approach begins with understanding what is driving the concern.
For carefully selected patients, muscle-relaxing treatment may help reduce trapezius overactivity, improve comfort and create a softer shoulder contour. Where appropriate, we may also recommend posture modification, lifestyle changes or referral for physiotherapy as part of a broader management strategy.
Every recommendation is evidence-based, individually assessed and designed to improve both comfort and function while maintaining natural movement.
