Pigmentation
What is pigmentation?
Pigmentation refers to areas of skin that appear darker than the surrounding skin due to an increase or uneven distribution of melanin, the pigment responsible for skin colour.
It can appear as sun spots, melasma, post-inflammatory pigmentation following acne or injury, or more general uneven skin tone. While these concerns may look similar, they often have very different underlying causes.
Why does it happen?
Pigmentation develops when the skin produces or distributes melanin unevenly.
Contributing factors may include:
- Hormonal changes
- Chronic inflammation
- Previous acne or skin injury
- Genetics
- UV exposure
- Vascular changes
- Skin barrier dysfunction
Why treating the cause matters
Often, several of these factors are present at the same time.
Pigmentation isn’t always just excess pigment.
The underlying cause may be hormonal, inflammatory, vascular or related to skin barrier dysfunction—and unless those underlying drivers are addressed, recurrence is more likely.
Understanding the cause allows us to choose the most appropriate treatment, reduce the likelihood of it returning and build a strategy that supports healthier skin over the long term.
How do we assess it?
Every consultation begins with understanding.
Your assessment may include:
- Medical consultation
- Advanced skin analysis
- Medical photography
- Review of previous treatments
- Hormonal and medical history
- Lifestyle assessment
- Blood biomarkers where clinically appropriate
Our approach
Our goal is to understand not only what type of pigmentation you have, but why it developed and what may influence its recurrence.
We don’t believe pigmentation is treated with a single laser session.
Our approach combines advanced diagnostics, carefully selected technology, regenerative treatments and medical skincare to address both the visible pigmentation and the underlying factors contributing to it.
Every recommendation is evidence-based, carefully sequenced and tailored to your individual skin.

Zarya Insight
Two people may have pigmentation that looks almost identical, yet require completely different treatment strategies. Understanding why the pigmentation developed is often just as important as treating the pigment itself.
