Nasolabial Folds
What are nasolabial folds?
Nasolabial folds are the natural lines that run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth. Everyone has them, but they often become more noticeable with age as the face gradually changes.
Although many people think of them as “lines”, they are rarely caused by the skin alone.
Why do they happen?
Nasolabial folds become more noticeable as several facial structures change over time.
These may include:
- Collagen loss
- Skin laxity
- Changes in facial fat compartments
- Bone remodelling
- Genetics
- Natural ageing
Why treating the cause matters
Often, several of these changes occur together.
Nasolabial folds aren’t always a problem that should be filled.
For some people, the primary change is skin laxity. For others, loss of cheek support or changes in the surrounding facial structures contribute far more than the fold itself.
Treating the line in isolation may soften its appearance temporarily, but it doesn’t always restore natural facial harmony.
Understanding what is driving the change allows us to recommend the most appropriate treatment—or combination of treatments—for a more balanced and natural-looking result.
How do we assess it?
Every consultation begins with understanding.
Your assessment may include:
- Medical consultation
- Full facial assessment
- Medical photography
- Advanced skin analysis
- Assessment of facial support and proportions
- Review of previous treatments
Our approach
Rather than looking only at the fold itself, we assess the face as a whole to understand what has changed.
We don’t believe every nasolabial fold needs filler.
Our approach focuses on restoring support where it has been lost. Depending on your assessment, this may involve improving skin quality, stimulating collagen, tightening the skin or restoring support in other areas of the face before considering carefully selected injectable treatments.
Every recommendation is evidence-based, carefully sequenced and designed to preserve natural facial proportions.

Zarya Insight
Nasolabial folds are often a consequence of changes elsewhere in the face. Looking beyond the fold itself allows us to restore support and facial harmony, rather than simply filling a line.
