Benign Skin Lesions

What are benign skin lesions?

Benign skin lesions are common, non-cancerous growths that often develop naturally over time. They may appear on the face or body and can become more noticeable with age, sun exposure or friction.

Common examples include skin tags, seborrhoeic keratoses, cherry angiomas and milia.

Although benign, they may become irritated, catch on clothing or jewellery, or simply become a cosmetic concern.

Why do they happen?

Benign skin lesions develop for many different reasons.

These may include:

  • Ageing
  • Genetics
  • Sun exposure
  • Friction
  • Hormonal changes
  • Individual skin characteristics

Why treating the cause matters

Most people develop at least one benign skin lesion during their lifetime.

Not every skin lesion is benign.

Many harmless skin lesions can closely resemble one another, and occasionally they may resemble conditions that require further medical assessment.

Understanding exactly what a lesion is before removing it is an essential part of safe medical practice.

Our priority is not simply removal—it’s making the right diagnosis first.

How do we assess it?

Every consultation begins with careful clinical assessment.

Your consultation may include:

  • Medical examination
  • Dermoscopic assessment where appropriate
  • Medical photography
  • Review of your medical history
  • Discussion of any changes in appearance or symptoms

Our approach

If there is any uncertainty about the diagnosis or concern regarding the nature of a lesion, we will recommend appropriate referral before proceeding with treatment.

We believe every skin lesion deserves careful assessment before treatment.

Where appropriate, benign lesions can often be removed quickly and comfortably using techniques that aim to minimise downtime and optimise cosmetic healing.

Every recommendation is guided by clinical judgement, safety and your individual goals.
