Nutritional Deficiencies
What are nutritional deficiencies?
Nutrients are essential for every system in the body. They support energy production, immune function, hormone synthesis, cognitive performance, skin health, muscle function and healthy ageing.
When levels become suboptimal, symptoms may develop gradually and often affect multiple areas of health before a deficiency becomes severe enough to be recognised.
Why does it happen?
Nutritional deficiencies can develop for many different reasons. Often, more than one factor contributes at the same time.
- Dietary intake
- Reduced absorption
- Gut health
- Certain medications
- Increased physiological demand
- Chronic inflammation
- Hormonal changes
- Genetics
- Differences in how the body processes and utilises nutrients
Why understanding the cause matters
A low nutrient level doesn’t always mean you simply need more of that nutrient.
A low vitamin B12 level, for example, may reflect dietary intake, poor absorption, medication, gut health, an underlying medical condition or even how your genes influence the way your body processes and utilises nutrients.
Simply replacing what is low may improve the number on a blood test, but understanding why it became low allows us to make better decisions and build a strategy that is truly personalised to you.
How do we assess it?
Every assessment begins with understanding.
- Medical consultation
- Lifestyle and nutritional review
- Medical and family history
- Review of current supplements and medications
- Advanced blood biomarkers, including iron studies, ferritin, vitamin B12, folate, vitamin D, magnesium, zinc, thyroid function, homocysteine and inflammatory markers
- Body composition analysis where relevant
- Genetic insights, including methylation and nutrigenomic testing
- Gut health assessment where clinically indicated
- Additional investigations or specialist referral where required
Our approach
Correcting a nutritional deficiency is only one part of the journey.
We aim to understand why the deficiency has developed before recommending the most appropriate strategy. Depending on your assessment, this may include dietary optimisation, improving nutrient absorption, correcting underlying health issues, targeted supplementation or further investigation.
Every recommendation is evidence-based, carefully prioritised and tailored to your individual biology, helping you feel and function at your best over the long term.

A deficiency is often the beginning of the conversation, not the end of it. Understanding why a nutrient has become depleted allows us to build a more personalised strategy that supports long-term health rather than simply correcting a blood test.
