Facial Thread Veins
What are facial thread veins?
Facial thread veins are small, permanently enlarged blood vessels that become visible beneath the surface of the skin. They most commonly appear around the nose, cheeks and chin, creating persistent redness or fine red and purple lines.
While harmless, they can become more noticeable over time and are often difficult to conceal with skincare or makeup alone.
Why do they happen?
Facial thread veins develop when small blood vessels lose their ability to contract effectively.
Contributing factors may include:
- Genetics
- Sun damage
- Rosacea
- Repeated flushing
- Hormonal changes
- Skin ageing
- Environmental factors
- Trauma to the skin
Why treating the cause matters
For many people, several of these factors contribute simultaneously.
Not all facial redness is caused by thread veins.
For some people, persistent redness is primarily vascular. For others, inflammation, rosacea or skin barrier dysfunction may play a much greater role.
Treating visible blood vessels without understanding what is driving them may improve the appearance temporarily, but it may not address the factors contributing to ongoing redness or the development of new vessels.
